FAQs on Law 18A and the VMS Units

Why didn't the Gulf Fishermen's Association act on this lawsuit sooner?  It may be too late for us to fight Law 18A.  The VMS units must be installed by Dec. 7th.  Seems to me the train has left the station.

I found that I can pay for the VMS unit with a federal grant, but the funds may be limited so I need to act soon.  Once I purchase, I'm not sure I care about a lawsuit.  Does the GFA recommend waiting to purchase a VMS?

"The federal grant reimbursement is a very short term fix.  You will still be responsible for installation, monitoring fees, repairs and replacements.  You know when it breaks down it will most likely break down offshore, and you'll be required to come in early from your trip.  Not to mention you'll be responsible for call-in requirements, and law enforcement will be there waiting for you at the docks.  Imagine each time you leave the dock or return from a fishing trip and can't unload for three hours because you're waiting for law enforcement to come check your fish.  This is worth FIGHTING.

This reimbursement reminds me of the drug dealers who give you your first fix for FREE.  After that, you always have to pay.  Don't get hooked; nothing is free.  The announcement of limited reimbursement funds has gotten some people worried about saving a few dollars.  That money is just a drop in the bucket compared to what the VMS units will cost over the years and for the rest of your fishing career.

I do not plan on buying one of those units, nor does the rest of the fleet down this way.  We need your support."
